Why Single Women Should Buy Rings for Themselves
Single? Buy the ring anyway.
You don’t need to wait for a proposal to wear a beautiful ring.
I hear it more often than you’d think.
I’ll be talking with a woman about rings — because rings are kind of my whole world these days — and she’ll show me her hand and say, almost apologetically, “Oh, I don’t really own any rings. I’m single.”
Every time I hear it, my heart hurts a little. Because tucked inside that sentence is a belief I want to gently pull apart: the idea that a ring is something you receive, not something you choose. That you have to wait for someone else to decide you’re worthy of one.
I don’t believe that. And I’d love for you to stop believing it too.
Somewhere along the way, we made rings conditional
Think about how we talk about rings. The engagement ring. The wedding ring. The promise ring. Almost every ring with a name attached to it is a ring that someone else is supposed to give you, at a moment they decide is right.
I love those rings. I really do. There’s something beautiful about a ring that marks a promise between two people. But here’s the underlying problem: if the only “real” rings are the ones we wait to be given, then a whole lot of wonderful women spend years — sometimes decades — with bare hands and a drawer full of maybe someday.
So here’s my advice: buy the ring
Buy the one you love. The one that catches your eye in the case and makes you a little giddy. It can be an expensive ring or a ten-dollar ring — the price tag has nothing to do with it. What matters is how you feel when you look down at your own hand and think, that’s mine, and I love it.
I’ve collected rings for years, and I can tell you the ones I treasure most aren’t always the priciest. Some are. Some absolutely are not. A few I bought on trips, in little shops, for almost nothing — and they carry a wonderful memory every time I wear them. The joy was never in the receipt. The joy was in the choosing, the meaning, and in the moment.
Why buying it yourself is worth doing
If you’ve been waiting, here’s what I’d love to share:
- You don’t need permission to feel beautiful. A ring you chose for yourself is a small, daily reminder of your beauty and worthiness.
- The story gets to be yours. “My husband gave me this” is a lovely story. So is “I saw this in Santa Fe and I couldn’t leave without it.” Both are worth telling.
- It’s a tiny act of showing up for yourself. We spend so much of our lives waiting — for the right time, the right person, the right circumstances. Buying the ring is you deciding you’re worth celebrating today — not someday.
- You’ll wear it more, and love it longer. When you pick it, it’s you. Your taste, your hand, your life. That’s the ring that feels like it was made for you.
Celebrate yourself — right now
I came to entrepreneurship late in life. I started building something new when a lot of people would say the moment had passed, and I learned something I think about all the time: the permission you’re waiting for is almost always yours to give.
Rings are no different.
So the next time you’re tempted to say “I don’t own any rings, I’m single,” I hope you’ll pause — and then go find the one that makes you smile. Wear it because you like it. Wear it because it’s Tuesday. Wear it because you’re here, and that’s reason enough.
And when you find that ring — the one you chose, the one that’s entirely yours — take good care of it. Give it a safe place to land when it comes off at the gym, at the beach, at the sink.
That’s a little of what we do around here at Ring Thing®. But the real message today is simpler than any product:
Don’t wait for someone to put a ring on your finger.
You can do that yourself.
What’s the ring you chose for yourself — or the one you’re finally going to go buy? I’d love to hear about it. 💍
